Interesting facts about creatine
What is creatine?
Creatine is a substance your body already knows, as it is also naturally produced within the body. Creatine is produced from the amino acids (protein building blocks) arginine, glycine and methionine in the liver and kidneys. It is then primarily stored in the muscles.
Creatine is a versatile and proven substance that has long been appreciated by nutrition-conscious individuals. It has become a regular part of daily life for many people with active lifestyles.
How much creatine should I take?
There is no fixed recommendation on how much creatine you should take. However, you have to take into account that the creatine present in the kidneys is partially broken down to creatinine by the body’s own metabolic processes. This metabolic product cannot be utilised by the body and is excreted in the urine. The average adult needs around 1–3 g of creatine every day to maintain their creatine level. About half of that amount is produced by the body. The other half is contained in the foods we eat, especially red meat and fish.
The 1.5 g of creatine contained in Ehrmann High Protein Creatine therefore represents a moderate supplementation.
What are the health benefits of creatine?
Until now, creatine has been primarily recognised in the field of sport, and its effects have been officially confirmed by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) with the following two health claims, both of which assume a daily intake of 3 g creatine.
Speed-strength in sport
Creatine increases physical performance in successive bursts of short-term, high intensity exercise and helps you to unlock even more power during explosive exercises. Ideal for athletes who want to maximise their power in every workout.
The claim may be used only for food which provides a daily intake of 3 g of creatine. The claim may be used only for foods targeting adults performing high intensity exercise.
Maintaining and building muscle strength in old age
Creatine in combination with regular strength training can effectively increase muscle strength in adults aged 55 and over.
The beneficial effect is obtained with a daily intake of 3 g of creatine in conjunction with resistance training, which allows an increase in the workload over time and which should be performed at least three times per week for several weeks, at an intensity of at least 65 %-75 % of one repetition maximum load (Repetition maximum load is the maximum weight or force an individual can exert in a single lift). The claim may be used only for foods targeting adults over the age of 55, who are engaged in regular resistance training.
